EVENT REPORT
Spring Blossom Premium Bunraku A Journey Through History Woven with Prayer and Love
Greetings
On behalf of the organizers, Ryuichiro Nishiyama, President and Representative Director, President and COO of SEIBU HOLDINGS INC., conveyed his wish that all participants would enjoy their stay at the historic Sanyo-so along with a special, multisensory experience, including Bunraku.
Guests also heard remarks from Toshikazu Yamaguchi, President of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings, a partner in the project "Action! Traditional Culture," which promotes Japan’s traditional culture. Touching on challenges such as the shortage of successors, he called for greater interest in and support for traditional performing arts.
Workshop
Prior to the performance, performer Rosetayu Toyotake provided an introduction to Bunraku, including an overview of the story and an explanation of the roles of the narrator (tayu), shamisen player, and puppeteers. As this marked the first sewamono performance, he gave a clear and engaging explanation of how it differs from jidaimono, adding touches of humor that occasionally drew laughter from the audience.
In the latter half, as in the previous year, guests were also invited to try chanting like a tayu. It was an enjoyable experience for a wide range of guests, from first-time viewers to devoted Bunraku fans.
Special Bunraku performance staged with the artwork "Hou-kou" by Sayoko Eri, a kirikane artist and Living National Treasure
A special Bunraku performance was staged on the Yuho stage in the grand hall, featuring "Hou-kou". The program presented Tsubosaka Kannon Reigenki ("Sawaichi Uchi yori Yama no Dan"), a moving story in which faith and marital love lead to a miracle. The stage set, with pine trees and mountains rendered in kirikane artwork, came together in beautiful harmony, creating a uniquely atmospheric performance at Sanyo-so. At the curtain call following the performance, in addition to the tayu, shamisen player, and principal puppeteer, the ashizukai and hidarizukai, who operate the feet and left hand and whose faces are not visible during the performance, also removed their hoods and acknowledged the audience’s applause together with the puppets they had operated.
Dinner with the performers
Kanya Yoshida, a puppeteer and producer of this special performance, and Rosetayu Toyotake, a tayu, were also present at the dinner for Diamond Members, as in the previous two events. For this event, they changed seats between the first and second halves of the dinner, creating opportunities to interact with the guests. Guests enjoyed a relaxing and elegant time over kaiseki cuisine prepared with carefully selected ingredients, with seasonal touches that evoke the arrival of spring and beautifully presented dishes.
Puppetry and shamisen demonstration
During the dinner, the performers gave a live demonstration and commentary on puppetry and shamisen on stage. The puppetry segment was led by performers making their first appearance at this event, who explained the puppets and shared personal stories about how they entered the world of Bunraku, creating a warm and approachable atmosphere. Enjiro Tsuruzawa, who led the shamisen segment, gave a masterful performance that delighted even returning guests and drew warm applause from the audience.
Premium after-show discussion
After the dinner, guests were invited to Bar Kanogawa, where they had the opportunity to interact freely with all 11 performers. Returning guests enjoyed reuniting with the performers after nearly a year, while conversations with performers making their first appearance at this event were especially lively. The evening concluded with the customary Osaka-style handclap. Led by Tamaka Yoshida, the only performer from Osaka, the Osaka-style handclap brought the evening to a close as guests expressed their hopes of meeting again.
Puppetry Experience and Matcha Service
The following morning, guests were invited to a hands-on puppetry experience at the entrance of the Sanyo-so New Building, where they could handle the puppets themselves. With support from puppeteers including Kanya Yoshida, guests tried holding the puppets themselves, and some were surprised by their unexpected weight. Guests enjoyed taking commemorative photos and engaging in lively conversation. In a room at the Prince Vacation Club arranged in the style of a tea room, matcha was served in the ryurei style, allowing guests to enjoy it with views of the garden.
