On behalf of the organizers, Ryuichiro Nishiyama, President and Representative Director, President and COO of SEIBU HOLDINGS INC. expressed gratitude toward all participants and his thoughts on this event. Guests also heard some greetings from Toshikazu Yamaguchi, Representative Director President, The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings, which is a partner in the project "Action! Dentou-Bunka," which promotes Japan’s traditional culture.
Workshop
Prior to the performance, performer Rosetayu Toyotake explained about the world of Bunraku performance, the synopsis and highlights of the play, and the work of a traditional performer. In the latter half of the workshop, participants were invited to deliver the lines from the play with emotion, which warmed up the atmosphere in the hall and heightened anticipation for the performance.
Special Bunraku performance staged with the artwork "Hou-kou" by Sayoko Eri, a kirikane artist and Living National Treasure
A special performance of Bunraku, renowned as the world's most sophisticated puppet theater, was staged in the Yuho room. This event's program was Kinden-no-Dan from Imoseyama Onna Teikin, a magnificent fantasy set in an ancient dynasty. The stage set and kirikane artwork (artistically cut sheets of metal) were in exquisite harmony, delivering a performance that could only be experienced at Sanyo-so.
Dinner with the performers
Kanya Yoshida, puppeteer and producer of this special performance, and traditional performer Rosetayu Toyotake, were present at the dinner for Diamond Members, as they had been last year. The guests enjoyed endless conversation over kaiseki cuisine prepared with carefully selected ingredients by Akihiro Fune, former head chef of Sanyo-so and current head chef of Arisugawa Shimizu.
Puppetry and Shamisen demonstration
During the dinner, a puppetry and Shamisen demonstration with commentary by the performers was held on the stage. During the puppet demonstration, three puppeteers descended from the stage toward the guests to show them directly how the puppets work. The performers also answered questions from the guests during the Shamisen demonstration.
Premium after-show discussion
The guests enjoyed drinks and the opportunity to meet the performers at Bar Kanogawa. A wide range of deep topics was discussed, including behind-the-scenes facts not disclosed during public performances and the future of the Bunraku world.
Puppeteering experience
The next morning, guest had the opportunity to directly handle the puppets under the guidance of Kanya Yoshida and other puppeteers at the entrance of the Sanyo-so New Building. As well as commemorative photos, this was a valuable opportunity to exchange words with the performers.
Matcha tea service
One of the rooms at Prince Vacation Club was used as a tea room, where matcha tea produced in Shizuoka was served. The relaxed atmosphere certainly sparked conversation among the participants.
