Greetings
On behalf of the organizers, greetings were offered by Ryuichiro Nishiyama, President and Representative Director, President and COO of SEIBU HOLDINGS INC. and Akitoshi Muraoka, Representative Director President, The Yomiuri Shimbun, which is a partner in the "Action! Dentou-Bunka" project to promote traditional culture.
Workshop
Prior to the performance, performer Rosetayu Toyotake explained about how to watch Bunraku performance, some highlights of the play, and the work of a traditional performer.
Special Bunraku performance staged with the artwork "Hou-kou" by Sayoko Eri, a kirikane artist and Living National Treasure
Bunraku is one of Japan's three major traditional performing arts, along with Noh and Kabuki, and is designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property. The audience enjoyed Hiragana Seisuiki, a piece depicting the Genpei War in this region associated with the warring Taira and Minamoto clans. In the latter half of the performance, real plum blossoms added to the impact of the delicate, spectacular kirikane artwork (artistically cut sheets of metal).
Dinner with the performers
Kanya Yoshida, puppeteer and producer of this special performance, and traditional performer Rosetayu Toyotake, were present at the dinner for Diamond Members. While enjoying a special dinner featuring Izu's freshest seasonal ingredients, the guests had the opportunity to exchange their impressions of the performance and learn more about Bunraku theater.
Puppetry and Shamisen demonstration
In the dinner room, a puppetry and Shamisen demonstration with commentary by the performers was held on the stage. During the puppetry demonstration, the mechanisms of the puppets, the roles of the main puppeteer, left puppeteer, and foot puppeteer, and similar topics were explained in a humorous fashion, drawing laughter and applause from the audience. In the Shamisen commentary, the Shamisen player demonstrated the tones used to express emotions and scenes through the use of different styles of playing, further sharing the appeal of Bunraku.
Premium after-show discussion
After dinner, the audience moved to Bar Kanogawa for a special time to talk with the performers. The audience exchanged various stories and thoughts during this intense and precious hour with leading veterans in the world of Bunraku to young performers who will carry the art forward into the future. The evening ended with the Osaka-jime hand-clapping tradition, transcending the boundary between performers and participants to create a sense of unity.
Puppeteering experience
The next morning, at the entrance of Sanyo-so New Building, Kanya Yoshida and other puppeteers taught the participants how to hold and move the puppets. Several participants were surprised at the weight of the puppets, which was heavier than they had imagined. They also enjoyed taking commemorative photos with the plum blossoms arranged by ikebana artists Toru Nagoya and Daichi Nagoya displayed at the entrance.
This event was part of the "Action! Dentou-Bunka"
